Do RFID-Blocking Wallets Actually Work? An Honest Answer
RFID-blocking wallets are sold with a specific fear attached: someone walks past you in a crowd with a hidden reader, silently copies your card, and empties your account. It makes for a good ad. It is also not quite how the risk works.
Here is what contactless skimming can and cannot do, what the lining in an RFID wallet actually does, and how to decide whether you need one.
What a contactless card actually broadcasts
A contactless card has a small antenna and chip inside. It has no battery. It only wakes up when a reader's electromagnetic field powers it, which is why you have to hold your card within a few centimetres of a terminal for it to work.
When it wakes, it does not hand over everything. It gives the card number, the expiry date, and a one-time cryptographic code generated for that single transaction. It does not give your name, your billing address, or the CVV printed on the back.

So how bad is the actual risk?
Two things limit it, and both matter.
Range. The physics are stubborn. A standard contactless reader works at a few centimetres. A determined attacker with amplified equipment can extend that, but not to the length of a room — and the bigger the equipment, the more obvious they are. In practice a skimmer has to get their reader almost touching your pocket or bag.
What the stolen data can buy. Because the one-time code is single-use, a captured tap is difficult to replay. Most online checkouts also ask for the CVV, the billing ZIP, or a bank app confirmation — none of which the card broadcasts. That is why documented cases of real-world contactless skimming are rare compared with the volume of ads warning about it.
The honest summary: it is a real technical possibility that has not become a common way people lose money. Card-not-present fraud from data breaches and phishing is a far bigger problem, and no wallet protects against those.
What RFID blocking does, mechanically
An RFID-blocking lining is a thin conductive layer — usually a metallic film or metal-fibre fabric — that disrupts the electromagnetic field a reader depends on. Without that field the chip never wakes, so there is nothing to intercept.
Contactless bank cards run at 13.56 MHz, and a lining that blocks that band will also block most hotel keys, transit cards and office access fobs sitting in the same slots. That is worth knowing before you buy, because it can be inconvenient: your building pass may need to come out of the wallet to work.
Two things it does not do:
- It does not protect a card once it is out of the wallet.
- It does nothing about the fraud that actually drains most accounts — stolen card details from a hacked website, or a convincing phishing text.
How to check that a wallet's blocking is real
Some wallets advertise RFID blocking and have nothing inside but ordinary lining. You can test yours in about a minute.
- Put a contactless card in the wallet, closed, and hold it against a card terminal or a contactless reader at a self-checkout. It should not register.
- Better: hold the closed wallet against the back of an NFC-enabled phone with a card-reading app open. A card that is blocked will not appear.
- Repeat with the card outside the wallet to confirm the reader and card are both working.
If the card reads through the closed wallet, the lining is decoration.

Lining, sleeve, or nothing?
A separate sleeve is cheap and works, but you have to slide each card in and out, and most people stop bothering within a fortnight.
A lined wallet covers every card automatically as long as the wallet is closed. There is nothing to remember, which is the only reason it keeps working.
Nothing at all is a defensible choice if you understand the risk and would rather keep your transit card tappable in your pocket.

What actually protects your money
If the goal is fewer fraudulent charges rather than a specific gadget, these do more than any wallet:
- Turn on instant transaction alerts in your banking app.
- Use your phone's wallet where you can — it tokenises the card number and needs your face or fingerprint.
- Check statements monthly; small test charges usually come before large ones.
- Report a lost card immediately rather than waiting to see if it turns up.
- Treat unexpected texts about deliveries and bank problems as phishing until proven otherwise.
